Chief Downing seems to be making a habit, lately, of publishing letters in the local Long BeachRead Moremedi a bashing LBPD. In that he is not at all unlike Mr. Ruehle, who (as this and previous postings illustrate) is only too happy to parrot Chief Downing's letters on other local media sites. Could Chief Downing have his eye on LBPD's Chief's spot in the event Chief McDonnell is elected Sheriff? If so, could Ruehle be doing whatever he can to get and keep Downing's name and comments in the local public's awareness?

"A recent column in the Orange County Register..." ~~~ Two months ago is hardlyRead More"rece nt" for a daily newspaper. ------------------------------------------------- "...which prints what Long Beach medias choose to ignore." ~~~ I seem to recall you linking this same letter as printed in the Beachcomber. I also see it posted here, at the BSN Patch and at LB Patch as well. So, apparently, "Long Beach medias" *do* publish these sorts of things. ------------------------------------------- Sigh, did you learn nothing at *all* in your absence, Ruehle?

Long Beach should follow San Francisco's and San Diego's lead by taking politics out of unionRead Morecontra ct negotiations. Those cities allow TAXPAYERS to vote final approval on ALL union benefit increases currently negotiated and approved behind closed doors by elected officials whose election campaigns were bought and paid for with union money. ______________________________________________________ Currently, every member of the city employee, police and fire unions have the privilege of seeing the details of union contract negotiations and then get to vote to ratify the proposed contract. Long Beach taxpayers are not allowed this same privilege. ______________________________________________________ Why don’t Long Beach taxpayers likewise get to see and vote on whether we accept new contracts like other California cities? After all, we are the ones paying for it. Shouldn't taxpayers be allowed to accept the terms negotiated rather than relying on often corrupt elected officials? ______________________________________________________ If this change were made to Long Beach's city charter, Unions and elected officials would have a much higher likelihood of actually negotiating in good faith, knowing the public could reject ridiculous pay and pension increases similar to those approved in the past without taxpayer's knowledge. ______________________________________________________ I’ve brought this up several times at city council meetings and was ignored each time without comment from ANY Councilmember. WHY?
