A videographer at the scene said the female suspect had been taken to a hospital after the shooting.
Broadcast footage showed Greer with his right arm in a sling. NBC4 reported that he had been hospitalized for injuries to his shoulder and collarbone.
Greer told NBC4 he shot the woman as a deterrent to the male suspect.
"I shot her, so that's going to leave a message on his mind for the rest of his life," Greer told NBC4.
Nancy Pratt of the Long Beach Police Department said information about the shooting would be released Thursday.
