As a precaution today, the Bancroft campus was locked down at about 11:30 a.m. after a report of a possible unauthorized person on campus.  We followed our safety procedures, and with the help of police and School Safety we conducted a thorough search of the campus but found no such unauthorized person on campus.  The lockdown was lifted at about 1:45 p.m., and we resumed the day with a delayed lunch period. Long Beach City Council Member Gerrie Schipske alerted residents about an hour ago that Bancroft Middle School in her council district had been put on lockdown after a report of an adult on campus with a gun.

Bancroft School NO LONGER on Lock Down STATUS

It's scary to be in lockdown fOr 2 hours. I'm a 7th grader at bms. I was stuck in my 4th period class for the whole rest of the day. First we got the notification of a possible unothorized person on campus with a weapon which frightened all of us very much. Then from our class room window we seen a helicopter circling our school after that police arrived and had dogs searching every area of the school. Thankfully no one got hurt

Alexa, do you believe it was a false report, as has been happening in the L.A. area? How long did the lockdown last? Did parents know about it?
Debra Stone January 15, 2013 at 02:28 AM
I don't care if it's rumor or not we need to know are kids are safe and not after the bad guy gets in but before. Monroes gates were wide open evenafter they were notified of the lockdown .

Hi Debra, what are you wanting to happen that you think is not being done and by whom? I've never seen Lowell or Rogers' gates not locked on all sides but the front (which is open). How far is Monroe from Bancroft? The lockdown drills outside of Long Beach have been underway a few weeks. My friend in another county said they've done a couple already since early January.

Come on people...really? Alleged gunman...no gunman found? You're adding fuel to the proverbial fire here. My gut feeling is that it was an over-active imagination combined with something else(God only knows what that "something else" might be.) Bad part is that IF it were done deliberately, the children WERE TRAUMATIZED UNNECESSARILY, the person responsible should admit it and be held accountable because the DARKEST part of this "Drill" is that the NEWS went out globally so that MORE CLOSET CRIMINALS will consider committing a "Copy Cat" version of Sandy Elementary :-( But after this ordeal, at least Bancroft and the EMS and Law Enforcement Agencies are better prepared if anything EVER REALLY happens here in sweet little Lakewood....the place where I grew up and love.
