A man who allegedly brandished scissors while struggling with security personnel and sheriff's deputies at a Compton Target store was killed in an officer-involved shooting today following a slow-speed chase that ended in Long Beach, authorities said.

The chase began around 2:45 p.m., according to the sheriff's department.

The suspect fled from the store in the 1600 block of South Alameda Street and got into a white SUV, taking local streets at slow speeds and even stopping for traffic signals, while avoiding spike strips placed in his path.

The pursuit ended in the area of Ocean Boulevard and 14th Place, where the suspect refused to comply with deputies' commands to exit the vehicle, according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

"Approximately 15 minutes later, the suspect exited the vehicle with a large wooden stick in hand, again refusing to comply with deputies' verbal commands," she said.

Deputies used a less lethal "stunt bag" in an attempt to safely detain the man, but it had no effect and he ran from the scene, Navarro-Suarez said.

"The suspect then encountered Long Beach Police Department officers, who were assisting on the containment, and a LBPD officer-involved shooting occurred," she said.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Navarro- Suarez said.

Target security originally tried to detain the man for an unspecific crime he allegedly committed in the store, she said.
