Man Killed in Long Beach Gang-Related Shooting

The victim was attacked after he was confronted at a bus stop on Cherry Avenue south of PCH, police said.

A man was shot to death in a gang-related attack at a Long Beach bus stop south of Pacific Coast Highway, police said Thursday.

Levert Johnson, 25, was shot at about 8:40 p.m. Wednesday as he stood with a group at the bus stop on Cherry Avenue near 17th Street, which is south of PCH, said the Long Beach Police Department in an e-mailed press statement. Johnson later died at the hospital, department spokeswoman Nancy Pratt wrote in the announcement.

Johnson "was confronted by a male subject,'' according to a Long Beach Police Department statement. ``Words were exchanged between the two and the suspect then pulled out a handgun and shot victim Johnson, striking him multiple times.''

A description of the suspect, who ran away, was not released, but anyone with information on the crime was urged to call police at (800) 222-TIPS

The attack is being investigated as gang-related.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Long Beach Police Homicide Detectives Scott Lasch and Donald Goodman at (562) 570-7244.  Anonymous tips may be submitted by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), texting TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or visiting www.lacrimestoppers.org.
