Harry Saltzgaver Tapped to Lead Long Beach Board of Water Commissioners
The Long Beach Board of Water Commissioners Thursday night elected Harry Saltzgaver as president during a specially held board meeting.
Saltzgaver, who was appointed to the board last fall by Mayor Bob Foster, will officially begin his term Oct. 1.
He takes over for outgoing President, John D. S. Allen. Also elected during the meeting were Frank Martinez, as vice president and Paul Blanco, as secretary.
“I'm thankful for the opportunity to serve,” said Saltzgaver, President-Elect to the Long Beach Board of Water Commissioners.
“We are facing some critical years to continue to secure an adequate water supply for our city's future,” added Mr. Saltzgaver.
“The Long Beach Water Department is a national leader in that regard, and I'm honored to be a part of it.”
Since 1992, Saltzgaver has served as the executive editor of Gazette Newspapers (which includes the Grunion, Downtown, Uptown, and online).
He has worked in the newspaper business for more than 30 years, with experience on both weekly and metropolitan daily papers in Colorado and California.
Saltzgaver has been an active participant in the Long Beach community, serving on a variety of boards and committees over the years, including 11 years of service on the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission.
He currently chairs the Goodwill SOLAC board of directors and is a Trustee of the Grand Prix of Long Beach Foundation. He is a former member of Women Shelter of Long Beach, Precious Lamb Preschool, Public Corporation for the Arts and the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce.
Saltzgaver lives in north Long Beach with his wife Maria and two big dogs.
Since 1931, the Water Department has been governed by a Board of five Water Commissioners, each appointed to a five year term by the Mayor, subject to approval of the City Council. The overlapping terms of the Board members provide necessary continuity and bring to the Department the combined expertise of the Commissioner's business and professional backgrounds.
