Long Beach City College Rededicates Student Center

Long Beach City College officials rededicated the remodeled Student Services Center, an $8.2 million retrofitting project that took two years to complete, Monday, college officials said.

The project was funded by Measure E, a bond measure approved by Long Beach Community College District voters in 2008 to improve LBCC facilities.

“Thanks to our Measure E building program, the expansion and modernization of Building A meets the needs of our students in one central, state-of-the-art location,” LBCC Superintendent-President Eloy Ortiz Oakley stated.

The retrofitting added nearly 5,800 square feet to the building, which was originally built in 1940, making it nearly 34,000 square feet, according to a press release.

The student center, located at 4901 E. Carson St. on LBCC's Liberal Arts campus, houses a variety of services, including enrollment services, financial aid, veteran affairs, WalWORKs and 21 walk-up computers, the release said.

The upgraded building, built by Martinez Architects and Tutor Perini Co., the general contractor of the project, is more energy efficient, using reclaimed water for landscaping and is connected to the district’s central air-conditioning system, the release said.

The building also includes an assisted-listening in all conference rooms and a rose garden in the courtyard, according to the release.

“I want to personally thank all of the voters who supported Measure E, and our citizens oversight committee and chair, JC Squires, for their efforts to ensure that our bond program met its intended goals for our students and beyond,” Oakley stated.
