UPDATE: Reported Armed Person Prompts Scare at Cal State Long Beach

UPDATE: A campus lock-down at California State University, Long Beach Tuesday was a false alarm, officials say. Two students saw what they thought was a gun and alerted campus police, according to Rick Gloady, the university’s spokesman.

The subsequent investigation revealed that the students had apparently mistaken a cell phone for a weapon, he said.

The initial emergency alert went out at around 3:30 p.m. warning people of a possible armed suspect on campus and urging people to evacuate. Shortly after 4 p.m., the all-clear was issued.

Long Beach Police was notified and assisted campus police in the investigation, Gloady said.

The incident was not related to an active-shooter drill held at the campus earlier in the day, he said.

The primary focus of that drill was to test the Cal State Long Beach’s Student Health Center’s ability to perform triage in the field, according to the university’s press release.
